Living in Colombia? Here's how to pay for care here

Medicare usually doesn't cover health care outside the US. Here's what still applies from home, what your options are in Colombia, and how to get written, itemized quotes from Medellín clinics.

What your US coverage does in Colombia

Medicare mostly stops at the border. A few pieces of US coverage still matter.

Medicare

Medigap

VA care

The Foreign Medical Program can reimburse treatment of VA-rated service-connected conditions here. Nothing else.

Your options in Colombia

Colombia's health system (EPS)

Residents may be able to join an EPS. Eligibility depends on your visa and status, so confirm with the EPS directly before you count on it.

Private plans

Medicina prepagada and international insurance give you access to networks of private clinics and doctors. Read the rules on age and pre-existing conditions closely.

Paying yourself

For dental work and planned procedures, you can pay the clinic directly. Get a written, itemized quote first, and keep every invoice.

How a quote works

  1. Send what you have

Records, test results, X-rays or a short description of what you need. WhatsApp is fine.

  2. Get a written plan

A Medellín clinic reviews your details and sends an itemized plan and price. Ask anything before you agree to anything.

  3. Book a date

You choose the clinic and the date. No referral needed.

  4. Keep the paperwork

Itemized invoices and records matter if you ever claim from an insurer or the VA.
