A facilitator — sometimes called a patient coordinator or medical tourism agency — can genuinely simplify planning a trip abroad. They can also add an invisible markup, steer you toward whichever clinic pays the highest referral fee, and disappear the moment something goes wrong. Both of these are common enough that vetting a facilitator deserves the same rigor as vetting a surgeon.

The single most important question

Ask directly how the facilitator is compensated. A transparent facilitator will tell you plainly whether they receive a commission from the clinic, and roughly what that looks like. One who dodges the question, or insists their service is "free" without explaining who's actually paying them, is a red flag — someone is always paying for the service; the question is whether that arrangement is influencing which clinic gets recommended to you.

• Provide real, verifiable credentials for the surgeons and facilities they work with — not just marketing copy
• Stay involved through recovery, not just through booking and payment

Credentialing bodies worth knowing

Certified Medical Travel Professional (CMTP) and Global Healthcare Accreditation (GHA) certification are two of the more meaningful credentials in this space as of 2026. Neither is a guarantee of a perfect experience, but both indicate the facilitator has gone through some external vetting rather than simply self-declaring expertise.
