Menopause and HRT Care in Colombia: Consults, Prescriptions and What It Costs

Women who cannot get a menopause-literate doctor at home, or cannot afford one, are finding that a consult in Medellín costs less than a US copay. Here is how it works and where the limits are.

Why women come to Colombia for menopause care

The common story is a woman in her late 40s or 50s with hot flashes, sleep disruption, joint pain and mood changes whose doctor at home either dismissed the symptoms or refused hormone therapy on the basis of guidance that has since been revised. In Colombia, gynecologists and endocrinologists in the private system see menopause as a routine part of practice, prescribe hormone therapy when appropriate, and charge consult fees that are a fraction of US cash prices. Many women combine the consult with another procedure or a dental trip.

What the visit looks like

  1. Before you fly: gather records. Last mammogram, any bone density result, your cycle history or date of last period, current medications, family history of breast cancer and clots, and any prior hormone use.
  2. Day 1: consult. A thorough menopause consult runs 30 to 45 minutes and covers symptoms, risk factors, contraindications and options: transdermal estradiol, oral estradiol, micronized progesterone, vaginal estrogen, and non-hormonal alternatives.
  3. Day 1 to 2: labs and imaging if needed. Hormone levels are not required to diagnose menopause but may be ordered to rule out thyroid disease or other causes. Mammogram and DEXA can be done in a day.
  4. Day 2 to 3: prescription and pharmacy. Colombian pharmacies carry estradiol patches and gels, oral estradiol, micronized progesterone and vaginal estrogen with a prescription. Bring the prescription home for your records.

Limits you need to know

Frequently asked questions

Can I get estradiol and progesterone in Colombia?

Yes, with a prescription from a Colombian physician. Patches, gels, oral tablets and vaginal preparations are available at major pharmacy chains.

Can I bring a supply home to the US or Canada?

Personal-use quantities with the prescription and original packaging are generally permitted, commonly up to 90 days. Verify current customs rules before you travel.

Do I need blood tests to start HRT?

Not to diagnose menopause after 45 with typical symptoms. Tests may be ordered to exclude thyroid problems or if the picture is unclear.

Will a Colombian doctor follow up remotely?

Some offer telehealth. Ask before you book, and arrange a prescriber at home for long-term management.
