Colombia's pharmacy system is modern and accessible. Major chains (Farmatodo, La Rebaja, Droguería Olímpica) operate extended hours with well-trained pharmacists. Many medications that require a prescription in the US are available over-the-counter in Colombia, and generic pricing is often 80–90% less than US pharmacy prices. Stock up on maintenance medications before you fly home.
Major Pharmacy Chains
Farmatodo is the largest chain, operating like a CVS/Walgreens with cosmetics, personal care, and pharmacy sections. La Rebaja (Droguería La Rebaja) focuses more on pharmaceuticals and often has the lowest prices. Droguería Olímpica is part of the Olímpica supermarket chain. All three have multiple locations in El Poblado, Laureles, and other medical tourism neighborhoods.
What's Available Without Prescription
Colombia's prescription requirements are less restrictive than the US for many medications. Common antibiotics, anti-inflammatories, muscle relaxants, and many other medications are available directly from the pharmacist. Controlled substances (opioids, benzodiazepines, stimulants) still require a prescription. Your surgical team will provide prescriptions for any post-operative medications you need.
Cost Savings
Generic medications in Colombia are dramatically cheaper than in the US. A medication costing $200/month in the US might cost $15–$30/month at a Colombian pharmacy. If you take maintenance medications (finasteride, minoxidil, blood pressure medications, cholesterol medications), consider filling several months' supply at a Colombian pharmacy before departure.
