Colombia sits close enough to the equator that "seasons" don't operate the way they do in temperate countries. What varies is rainfall, humidity, and clinic scheduling around Colombian holidays. For medical tourists, timing your trip well means avoiding a few specific windows and understanding what happens in others.
Windows to Avoid
Semana Santa (Easter Week)
The week leading up to Easter (dates shift every year — check Colombian calendars annually). This is Colombia's biggest domestic travel week. Clinics operate on skeleton crews, many surgeons take vacation, and elective cases are rescheduled. Not a good time to schedule surgery — but a fine time to plan a consultation trip if your consult day falls before Thursday.
Christmas / New Year (December 20 – January 5)
Similar dynamic. Colombia takes Christmas seriously as a family holiday. Many clinics run limited schedules from around December 20 through the first week of January. Elective surgery is scarce. Hospital-based emergency care runs full-time as always. Also: this window has the highest inbound tourist traffic, so flights and hotels cost more.
Colombian National Holidays
Colombia has more national holidays than the US (about 18 per year vs 10). Many "puente" long weekends. Clinics are usually open the working days surrounding these, but complex logistics (imaging, lab work, follow-ups) get harder around them. Rough list of major single-day closures:
- January 6 — Reyes Magos (moved to nearest Monday)
- March 19 — San José
- May 1 — Labor Day
- July 20 — Independence Day
- August 7 — Battle of Boyacá
- August 15 — Asunción de la Virgen
- October 12 — Día de la Raza
- November 1 — Todos los Santos
- November 11 — Independencia de Cartagena
Best Months by Purpose
February – May (except Semana Santa)
The sweet spot for most medical trips. Weather is dry to moderate in most cities. Clinics are fully staffed. Flight prices are moderate. Tourism traffic is lighter than December or July-August.
September – early November
Second sweet spot. Similar clinic availability and flight pricing. Slightly rainier in some cities but not disruptive.
January
Good after the first week. Clinics are open, tourism traffic drops after January 6, and January is genuinely quiet in Medellín and Bogotá.
June – August
Higher tourist traffic (US summer travel). Flight prices peak. Clinic availability is fine but hotels and Airbnbs are more expensive.
December (first 3 weeks)
Feasible until about December 15, though December 8 (Día de las Velitas) and pre-Christmas week get slower. After the 20th, plan around it.
Climate Notes by City
Medellín
Eternal spring. High 20s Celsius year-round, cool nights. April–May and September–November are the rainy seasons but rain typically comes as afternoon showers rather than all-day soaks. Any month works for medical travel.
Bogotá
Cool and often rainy. Highs in the mid-teens Celsius, lows around 8–10°C. Dry seasons are December–March and July–August. Rainy seasons are April–May and October–November. The rain isn't a barrier for medical trips but bring layers and rain gear year-round.
Cartagena and Barranquilla
Hot and humid. Highs around 30°C year-round. Wet season runs August–November; drier December–April. December–March is the peak season for tourism, so hotels are pricier.
Cali
Warm, low-altitude. Highs around 28–30°C. Two rainy seasons (April–May and October–November) but rain is generally short-duration.
Coffee Region (Pereira, Manizales, Armenia)
Mild spring-like year-round. Highs 22–25°C. Rain is scattered throughout the year with slight peaks in April and October.
Pricing Seasonality
Clinic pricing in Colombia doesn't vary meaningfully by season — a consultation costs the same in July as in January. What varies is everything else:
The Practical Recommendation
For a straightforward procedure and standard recovery, aim for February through early April or September through early November. Both windows offer full clinic operations, moderate flight prices, dry-ish weather in most cities, and reasonable Airbnb availability.
Avoid Semana Santa and the last two weeks of December + first week of January unless you have a specific reason to travel then.
For longer recovery stays where you want maximum flexibility (extended PT, staged procedures, multi-city stops), lean toward the September–early November window — you'll enter the year-end quiet season during recovery if you time it right.
Book clinic consultations before flights when possible. Clinic availability is what limits your date range; flights can adapt around the surgery date. Reversing this order sometimes forces expensive flight changes.
