No IVF coverage? Compare before you pay $12,000 or more a cycle.

A single IVF cycle in the US costs $12,000 to $25,000, according to the White House, and most employers don't cover it. Here's who does, and how to get an itemized quote from a Medellín fertility clinic.

Who covers IVF in the US

Coverage depends on the size of your employer and the state you live in:

27%of firms with 200+ workers cover IVF (KFF, 2024)
47%of employers with 500+ workers cover IVF (Mercer, 2024)
70%of employers with 20,000+ workers cover IVF (Mercer, 2024)

Depending on who's counting, 23 to 25 states require private insurance to cover some fertility care, and not all of those mandates include IVF (KFF; MultiState). If your employer is self-insured, state mandates may not apply. Ask HR.

What to ask for in a quote

The Medellín fertility clinics we checked don't publish IVF prices on their own websites, so a written quote is the number to compare. Make sure it says whether it includes:

  • Consultations and monitoring ultrasounds
  • Medications, which are often priced separately
  • Egg retrieval and anesthesia
  • Lab work, ICSI and embryo culture
  • Embryo freezing and storage
  • Embryo transfer and follow-up

Ask too how many days you'd need in Medellín, and which monitoring can happen at home before you travel. More detail is at ColombianIVF.com.

Before you choose a clinic

Colombia's infertility law refers to an infertile couple (Ley 1953 de 2019), and we haven't found any law that expressly allows or bars IVF for single women or same-sex couples. Each clinic sets its own policy. We'll ask before you send records.

Surrogacy in Colombia isn't regulated, and a bill to criminalize it was filed in August 2026 (Publimetro). This page doesn't cover surrogacy.

How a quote works

  1. Send your history

Recent test results, previous cycles and your age range. WhatsApp is fine.

  2. Get a written plan

A Medellín fertility clinic sends an itemized plan and price.

  3. Plan the cycle

Ask which steps happen at home and how many days you'd need in Medellín.

  4. Keep your records

Bring every report home for your doctor there.

Questions

Will my insurance pay for IVF in Colombia?

Ask your plan in writing, including whether it pays providers outside the US. Many employers don't cover IVF at all.

Do Colombian clinics treat single women and same-sex couples?

Colombian law doesn't expressly address it either way, so each clinic sets its own policy. We'll ask before you send records.

Are medications included?

Often not. Ask for medications as a separate line in your quote.

How long would I stay in Medellín?

It depends on the protocol. Ask the clinic which monitoring can happen at home and how many days you'd need there.
