Lost the weight? Here's what insurance pays for the skin that's left.

Insurers may cover removing an overhanging apron of skin when strict medical criteria are met, and treat a tummy tuck as cosmetic. Here's how those rules work, and what Medellín surgeons publish for body contouring.

You're not the only one

Nearly one in five US adults (18%) say they've taken a GLP-1 drug at some point, and 12% are taking one now (KFF poll, November 2025).

82%of ASPS member surgeons got consultation requests related to GLP-1 use in 2025
+22%upper body lifts in 2025
+21%arm lifts in 2025

Thigh lifts rose 20% too, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS, September 2026).

What insurance covers: one insurer's rules

Aetna's published policy is a good example of how strict this gets (Aetna CPB 0211). It covers a panniculectomy, removing the apron of skin and fat that hangs over the lower belly, only when all of these are met:

  • The skin hangs below the pubic bone, shown in front and side photos.
  • A skin rash or infection under the fold keeps coming back over 3 months despite treatment, also documented with photos.
  • Your weight has been stable for the last 3 months.
  • After bariatric surgery, there's an added 12-month wait.

The same policy lists abdominoplasty, a tummy tuck, as cosmetic. Other insurers have their own rules, so ask yours for its policy in writing.

What Medellín surgeons publish

A few Medellín plastic surgeons publish starting prices for a tummy tuck, in Colombian pesos. We haven't found any that publish prices for a panniculectomy or a lower body lift, so those need a written quote.

Starting prices rarely include everything. Ask what the quote covers: surgeon, anaesthesia, hospital, compression garments, drains, lymphatic massage and follow-up visits.

How a quote works

  1. Send photos and history

Front and side photos, your weight-loss history and any surgeries. WhatsApp is fine.

  2. Get a written plan

A Medellín plastic surgeon reviews it and sends an itemized plan and price.

  3. Plan the recovery

Ask how long the surgeon wants you in Medellín before you fly home.

  4. Come home with records

Bring your operative report and aftercare plan for your doctor at home.

Questions

Will insurance pay to remove my loose skin?

Maybe, for a panniculectomy, if you meet all of your insurer's criteria. Aetna, for example, requires photos, a recurring skin condition under the fold and 3 months of stable weight (Aetna CPB 0211). A tummy tuck is treated as cosmetic.

What's the difference between a panniculectomy and a tummy tuck?

A panniculectomy removes the overhanging apron of skin and fat. A tummy tuck also tightens the abdominal wall and reshapes the belly. Aetna's policy may cover the first and treats the second as cosmetic.

I'm still on a GLP-1. When can I have surgery?

Ask your surgeon. Many want your weight stable first, and insurers like Aetna require 3 months of stable weight before they'll consider coverage.

Will my insurance pay a surgeon in Colombia?

Don't assume it will. If your plan has any out-of-country coverage, get approval in writing before you book.
